Purple and Saatva are two of the more well-known mattress brands out there. Both companies have done very well in recent years and continue to come out with new, innovative beds.

In this article, we’ll focus on the Purple Hybrid mattress and Saatva Classic mattress. Both beds are very nice, and each bed has its own advantages.

Before we get into the primary differences between the two and why you would get one over the other, let’s first quickly discuss some of their similarities.

Purple wins when it comes to temperature regulation

The Purple Hybrid mattress does a great job when it comes to temperature regulation. You never sleep hot nor do you ever sleep too cool. And that’s primarily due to the nature of the hyper-elastic polymer top layer.

First, the Purple mattress cover is pretty thin. Second, hyper-elastic polymer is naturally cooler than most other materials used in beds. Also, the way the polymer is arranged in the bed makes a big difference in terms of airflow.

The polymer material is laid out in what Purple calls its “Smart Comfort Grid.” As the name implies, it’s a grid formation so air can flow freely throughout the columns. It’s not trapped like with some foam beds.

Don’t get me wrong — Saatva isn’t bad by any means. Coil systems are also advantageous in terms of promoting air flow, but the Saatva mattress has a layer of memory foam and a Euro pillow top that sits above the comfort coil system.

As such, we just feel like the Purple Hybrid mattress sleeps a little bit cooler since you’re essentially lying down directly on the hyper-elastic polymer.

The Purple mattress is softer and more comfortable

This is an easy one. The Purple Hybrid easily wins when it comes to softness and comfort. Again, the hyper-elastic polymer top layer is very soft and accommodating.

It’s a very unique, distinct feel. So unique, in fact, that it actually takes a couple of days to get used to it. When you lie down on the bed, you can feel yourself sort of displacing, moving, and compressing the little polymer squares.

But after sleeping on the bed for a few nights, you really start to enjoy the feel (at least I did). It ends up being one of those beds that you actually look forward to sleeping on.

new purple mattress review
The Purple Hybrid mattress is extremely comfortable.

The Saatva mattress, on the other hand, has a more traditional innerspring feel. It’s not particularly soft and it’s not overly comfortable. You definitely don’t get the pressure relief you do with Purple or with other foam-based mattresses.

But, hey, I guess some people out there actually prefer that, so at the end of the day, it comes to personal preference.

I’ve come across plenty of people who actually don’t like super soft mattresses. They prefer a more traditional, supportive feel. If that’s you, Saatva might be the way to go.

The Purple Hybrid mattress is better for side sleepers

Piggybacking off the previous point, we think the Purple Hybrid mattress is more ideal for side sleepers. The hyper-elastic material contours to your body and offers a tremendous amount of pressure relief for the heavier parts of your body, like your hips, trunk, and shoulders.

The Saatva mattress (luxury firm version), on the other hand, is definitely on the firmer side of the spectrum. It’s great when you’re on your back or stomach because it offers a tremendous amount of support.

But when you’re on your side, it fails to provide the necessary pressure relief. The mattress is pretty stiff and doesn’t really cradle your pressure points.

If you’re a strict side sleeper, we’d recommend trying the Saatva Plush Soft version. We haven’t tested that version, but it should provide a little more pressure relief since it layers the individually wrapped coils with softer and more conforming foams.

The Purple Hybrid mattress cover is removable

This is kind of a minor point but worth mentioning. The cover on the Purple mattress is removable, while the cover on the Saatva mattress isn’t.

However, even though it’s removable, Purple recommends you just spot-clean it with a mild detergent if it happens to get dirty. That’s how you clean most mattresses, so it’s not really a big deal.

Saatva mattress review

Saatva mattresses are good for:

  • people who like memory foam
  • hot sleepers on a limited budget
  • people who like firmer beds

Details:

  • free shipping and $99 service return fee
  • 180-night trial period
  • 15-year warranty
  • made in the United States

Although the Hybrid has plenty of advantages, don’t sleep (pun intended) on Saatva. It offers plenty of advantages as well.

Saatva is cheaper than the Purple Hybrid mattress

We’re not just talking by $50 either. On average, the Saatva Classic luxury mattress is cheaper by about $400 to $600 per size. Here’s how it breaks down:

Size Price (MSRP)
Twin $799
Twin XL $999
Full $1,299
Queen $1,399
King $1,799
Cal King $1,799

In comparison, here’s a pricing breakdown for the Purple Hybrid mattress:

Size Price (MSRP)
Twin XL $1,399
Full $1,599
Queen $1,699
King $1,999
Cal King $1,999

Prices valid as of September 23, 2020.

Yes, both mattresses are on the expensive side, but we’re not talking average bed-in-a-box mattresses here. These are premium mattresses that should easily last you 8 to 10 years.

Unfortunately, both companies don’t often offer coupon codes. Sometimes around big holidays, Saatva will run sales, though.

While Purple doesn’t offer coupon codes, the company almost always runs some sort of bundle deal. For example, Purple will give you a free mattress protector or free set of sheets when you purchase a mattress.

Saatva edges out Purple Hybrid when it comes to edge support

Edge support is important for couples who share a smaller-sized bed (i.e., Full or Queen) where you constantly find yourself near the edges throughout the night. You obviously want a mattress where you’re still being supported near the edges and won’t feel like you’ll easily roll off.

I’m glad to report that edge support with both the Purple Hybrid and Saatva luxury mattress is solid, but Saatva is just a little bit better. In fact, we think it’s one of the best (if not the best) mattress on the market in this department.

We’ve already discussed how the Saatva mattress has multiple layers of coils — that definitely helps. The multiple layers of coils provide a good amount of pushback when you’re lying down.

In addition to the coils, the Saatva mattress also has a foam-encased perimeter to prevent sagging. As a result, when you sit or lie down near the edge, you barely sink down at all — it’s pretty impressive.

We’ve tested other beds in the past, where when you sit on the edge, you sink down so much you can almost feel the slats below. Saatva gets big thumbs up here.

The Purple Hybrid mattress isn’t bad by any means, though. It too incorporates a foam border around the edges to help with edge support.

However, as I stated earlier, the hyper-elastic polymer is still a lot softer than the double coil system that the Saatva mattress uses, and as such, you do sink down a little more around the edges than with Saatva.

Saatva is better for people with heavier body weight

You probably get it by now. The Saatva mattress provides a ton of support. The double coil system also provides a good amount of bounce and strong pushback.

Purple is much softer, much more flexible, and conforms to your body quite a bit more. As such, we think Saatva is better for people with heavier body weight.

The Saatva Classic mattress comes in 3 different feels

The Saatva mattress is available in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. The Luxury Firm model is its best seller — that’s the model we tested out.

Saatva claims this model is ideal for back, stomach, and side sleepers, but we have to disagree. We think it’s good for back and stomach sleepers but doesn’t provide enough pressure relief for side sleepers.

If you’re primarily a side sleeper, you should try the Plush Soft model. Saatva claims this model will give you the feeling of being hugged by your mattress.

On the flip side, if you need a ton of extra lumbar support for your back, you should maybe think about checking out the firm version.

We think the Luxury Firm model already provides plenty of support, but to each their own. I’d only get the Firm version if your doctor or chiropractor recommends it.

If you like the innerspring feel, go Saatva

The Saatva mattress doesn’t have that prototypical soft foam feel that so many mattresses out there have these days. The Saatva mattress, thanks to the dual coil system, has more of a traditional innerspring feel.

If you don’t like the feel of memory foam or think the feel of hyper-elastic polymer might be a little too weird, you may really like Saatva. I’ve met plenty of people who don’t care for the feel of soft foam, so I’m not shocked that Saatva is doing well in the industry.

Purple vs. Saatva: Shipping, returns, and warranties

Both Purple and Satava offer free shipping and white glove delivery.

That means instead of the beds just arriving at your doorstep in a box where you’re then responsible for lugging it upstairs and getting it all set up, an actual human being will deliver the mattress and get it set up for you. You don’t have to worry about a thing.

Once the bed is delivered, both companies offer a generous trial period where you can test out the mattress. Saatva offers a 180-night trial period, while Purple offers 100 nights, which is about average for online mattresses.

Both companies also back their mattresses with a long warranty. In Saatva’s case, the company offers a 15-year warranty, but there’s one thing to note. For the first 2 years of the warranty period, Saatva will replace the mattress if it’s deemed defective, no questions asked.

Saatva does charge a $99 service return fee if you decide not to keep it, though. In years 3 to 15, Saatva will repair or re-cover the mattress for a $99 transportation cost each way. Purple, on the other hand, offers a more traditional 10-year limited warranty.

It’s also worth noting that the Saatva luxury mattress is available in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Luxury Firm is its flagship model, though. Saatva states the Luxury Firm model is favored by 81.4 percent of customers.

That’s the model we tested and what we’ll primarily be referring to in this comparison.

Also, the mattresses are available in two different heights. The base model is 11.5 inches, or you can choose the 14.5-inch model. Saatva claims both models feel the same; rather, the difference is more for aesthetic purposes.

Both Purple and Saatva mattresses are very responsive

Both mattresses in this comparison have pretty unique constructions. Purple utilizes a patented material called hyper-elastic polymer for its top layer. It’s a very soft and flexible material that’s also quite responsive.

It sort of feels like gel, but it’s not actually gel. Regardless, it pops back to its original shape almost immediately after releasing pressure. Here, take a look:

Hyper-elastic polymer is very responsive.

Adding to the responsiveness of the Purple mattress is the individual coil system that sits below the hyper-elastic polymer. These individual coils work in tandem with the polymer material and give the bed a little bounce.

Speaking of coils, the Saatva mattress incorporates two different levels of them. Near the top of the bed is a layer of individually wrapped comfort coils. These coils provide a good amount of bi-directional support (i.e., they contour to your body while also providing solid pushback).

Further, near the bottom of the Saatva mattress, is a steel support coil system. This layer prevents sagging and adds to the durability of the mattress.

All this means is that it will be very easy for you to switch sleeping positions throughout the night.

A lot of times, especially with heavy memory foam beds, you sink down quite a bit, and since memory foam isn’t as responsive, you’ll find it takes extra effort to switch between sleeping positions.

Responsiveness is also a good indicator of mattress durability. Generally, beds that are more responsive tend to hold their shape and last longer.

Purple Hybrid and Saatva are good but not great at limiting motion transfer

After testing each mattress, it was hard to pick a winner when it comes to limiting motion transfer. Both mattresses performed well, but they certainly weren’t the best we’ve ever tested.

In our test, we placed a half-full glass of water on one end of the bed and started rolling and walking all around the glass to see how much the glass and water inside were affected. In both cases, the water sloshed around a decent amount.

It wasn’t anything to be overly concerned with, it just wasn’t as great as some all-foam beds we’ve tested in the past.

Overall, I don’t think you’ll have any major issues if you or your partner toss and turn or get up a lot during the middle of the night.
