Sleeping on the wrong mattress can cause discomfort for anyone, while the right sleep surface can benefit quality of life. Since scoliosis can cause stiffness and pain, particularly in the lower back, it makes sense to look for a comfortable bed.

For people with scoliosis, a good mattress combined with pain management treatments like hydrotherapy, massage, exercises, or medication, can make a big difference in daily activities.

What’s the best type of mattress for people with scoliosis?

Relieves pressure points

Mattress comfort is highly subjective to each of us. But in general, mattresses that provide pressure point relief, while supporting spinal alignment, may be most beneficial for people with scoliosis.

Supports your entire body

The mattress should not sag or give way underneath you in such a way that creates gaps between your body and the mattress surface.

Is medium-firm

Severalstudies indicate that medium-firm mattresses may be best for alleviating back pain in general, and for providing sleeping comfort for people of various ages, heights, and weights. In one 2015 study, custom-inflated or adjustable, medium-firm mattresses provided the most benefits.

Includes foam layers

Layered memory foam mattresses may be a good choice for pressure point relief. Another cushioned option is a hybrid mattress, which combine layers of memory foam, gel, latex, and/or textile with an innerspring coil system.

Comes with a trial period

New mattresses will be at their most firm and may feel too hard in the beginning. All-foam mattresses for example will need time for you to adjust and break them in from use.

Has a clear return and refund policy

Check the store’s return policies:

  • How many days do they give you to try out and return the mattress for a refund?
  • How do they expect the mattress to be transported?
    • Are you responsible for moving and transporting or shipping the mattress back?
    • Do they provide a handling service for returns, and is there an additional fee?

Keep in mind that if you’re having pain with your current mattress, its age could be a factor. Over time, older mattresses of all kinds may start to sag and lose their ability to fully support the spine. This can cause back, hip, and shoulder pain.

Mattresses can be a significant expense, but should last for 10 to 15 years.

Best mattresses for scoliosis

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud

Price: $$$

This compressed, bed-in-the-box mattress is made from memory foam with three interior layers. It provides medium to medium-firm support.

Key features

The TEMPUR-Cloud offers deep contouring and support that both back and side sleepers find comfortable.

Reviewers, including those with mild scoliosis and other back issues, find this mattress significantly limits motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other, making it a good choice for couples, parents, and light sleepers who share the bed.

The manufacturer offers a 2-year payment plan, 90-night sleep trial period, and 10-year warranty.

Considerations

Some people may find that this mattress’s deep contouring provides too snug a fit.

Memory foam produces more heat buildup than hybrid mattresses and may not be the best choice for hot sleepers.

Other sellers may offer different trial and return policies.

Saatva Loom & Leaf

The Saatva Loom & Leaf memory foam mattress comes with free white glove delivery and setup. You can choose between relaxed firm or firm support. The relaxed firm option may be best for sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds.

Key features

A cooling spinal zone gel layer provides lumbar support and pressure point relief. A gel foam layer with a grid of pinholes can reduce heat retention.

The mattress has CertiPUR-US certified foam and is covered in quilted, organic cotton with natural, thistle flame retardant. These materials avoid that off-gassing smell.

The manufacturer offers a 180-night trial, 15-year warranty, and 0 percent APR financing for 6 months if paid in full.

Considerations

The mattress’s density and hug may feel too confining for some people.

Since it has more give, the relaxed firm option may not provide as much cooling as the firm mattress option does.

How to shop

Sitting on and lying down mattresses in person may be the best way to find the most comfortable one for you. There are, however, drawbacks to this.

Keep in mind that floor model mattresses have been “broken in” by repeated testing by customers, and they reflect the comfort level a mattress can achieve after some use.

The in-store shopping experience may be a little different these days. Most retailers should have simple measures and staffing in place to help people try out mattresses.

Make sure there is a trial period — and use it!

Whether you purchase your mattress in person or online, make sure it comes with a trial period that lets you try the mattress and return it for a full refund if it doesn’t work for you. You may have to spend several nights or more on a mattress, to determine if it’s the best one for you.

Look for mattress sales and discounts

Mattresses often go on sale throughout the year. If you have your heart set on a very expensive type, it may make sense to wait a few months. Mattresses often go on sale during holidays, such as Memorial Day, Presidents’ Day, and the Fourth of July.

Some manufacturers and stores offer payment plans or financing that can help you spread out payments over the course of many months.

Some brands, such as Tempur-Pedic, may only offer discounts and sales directly, through their own shopping sites.

The takeaway

Mattress preferences are highly personal. Typically, medium-firm mattresses will be best for people with scoliosis. Medium-firm mattresses are also good for alleviating back pain that is not associated with scoliosis.

Foam mattresses and hybrid mattresses may provide the most cushioning, pressure point relief, and support.
