However, don’t put too much stock in MSRP. You likely won’t pay full price. Layla Sleep is known for regularly running sales and promotions. On most occasions, you can expect to receive a discount in the $75 to $130 off range.

Layla has a 4-layer foam design

The Layla mattress is made up of four different foam layers that total 10 inches thick.

As we mentioned above, what really separates Layla from other bed-in-a-box mattresses is the fact that you can sleep on either side of the mattress. One side of the bed is slightly softer (signified by the light gray portion of the cover) and the other side is slightly firmer (the dark gray portion of the cover).

Given the bed is two-sided, it’s constructed a little differently than the standard foam mattress. Most all-foam beds use some sort of dense foam for their base or bottom layer.

With Layla, the dense foam layer sits in the middle of the mattress. To be specific, it’s a 4-inch layer of Support Core Foam, which serves as the foundation for the mattress.

Now, moving from the middle support core to the firm side, you have a 1-inch layer of copper gel memory foam. If you move from the middle support core to the soft side, you have two layers.

The first layer is 2 inches of AirFlow Support Foam, which acts as a transitional layer in the mattress. On top of the transition foam is a 3-inch layer of the same copper gel memory foam from the firm side.

By looking at the construction of the mattress, you can easily see why the soft side is indeed softer than the firm side. Not only is the layer of copper gel memory foam thicker (3 inches versus 1 inch), but it also has a transition foam that helps to combat the firm nature of the support core.

Wrapping the four foam layers is a soft, removable cover that has a geometric pattern. The cover is split by two different colors. This simply helps consumers quickly see whether the soft or firm side is up.

Also, although the cover is technically removable, you should refrain from unzipping it and tossing it in your washer to clean it. Instead, the company recommends that you dry-clean the cover in order to maintain its soft feel. We should also mention that the cover has a Thermo-Gel cooling textile woven into it to help regulate heat.

The last thing we’d like to point out in relation to construction is that the foams used within the Layla mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. This means the foams don’t contain any toxic materials or chemicals and are safe to sleep on.

Layla feel and firmness analysis

The Layla mattress has a memory foam feel. That’s probably pretty clear by this point. However, we wouldn’t classify the bed as having a traditional memory foam feel.

Sure, the comfort layers on both the soft and firm sides mold and form to your body as you would expect memory foam to do, but the bed overall just feels a little more fluffy and airy than your standard viscous memory foam mattress.

Overall, the bed has a very comfortable feel. Bottom line: If you like the feel of memory foam, we think there’s a very high likelihood you’ll be fond of the Layla mattress.

Moving on to firmness, this obviously depends on which side you select to sleep on. The soft side, in our opinion, garners a firmness rating around 2 to 4, while the firm side lands around a 5 to 7.

You probably noticed that we provided firmness ranges rather than specific numbers. This is due to the fact that firmness is very personal. It largely depends on your height, weight, and body type. In simple terms, the Layla mattress will feel quite different to individuals of various sizes.

Layla accommodates all types of sleepers

The Layla mattress is suitable for all sleeping positions. This is one of the benefits of having a double-sided, dual firmness design. If you find one side to be too soft or too firm, simply flip the bed over.

With that said, dominant side sleepers will likely find they prefer the soft side. This particular side is very forgiving and alleviates the pressure points of side sleepers extremely well.

The 3-inch memory foam layer does a good job of adapting to your body’s shape and wrapping your hips and shoulders to form a comfortable sleeping surface.

Dominant back and stomach sleepers, on the other hand, will likely prefer the firm side. You’ll sleep more on top of the surface of this particular side, which should help keep your spine in proper alignment with the rest of your body. For combination sleepers, it’s going to come down to trial and error and your specific split between the three main sleeping positions. For example, if you’re a combo sleeper that spends more than 50 percent of the night on your side, you’ll likely want to start with the soft side.

Likewise, if you’re a combo sleeper who only spends a limited amount of time on your side, we’d recommend starting out on the firm side to see how your body responds.

We should also remind you that this is a memory foam mattress. As such, you will feel a little resistance when attempting to switch between positions, since memory foam is not as responsive as other types of foam. It’s not a big deal, but it’s worth mentioning.

If you prefer responsive beds that allow you to switch positions effortlessly, you might want to look into latex foam mattresses.

Lastly, although we think the Layla mattress is a fine choice for all types of sleepers, that’s not necessarily the case for people of all sizes. Given the fact the bed is made entirely of foam, we think it’s best for peoples who weigh under 240 pounds.

Folks who weigh more are typically better off choosing a hybrid bed that contains coils. In most cases, these types of beds do a better job of supporting you, since coils provide more resistance against pressure than dense foundation foams.

The Layla Hybrid is more expensive than the Original Layla, but it’s still competitively priced all things considered. It’s right there in line with competing beds like the Casper Hybrid, Leesa Hybrid, and Tuft & Needle Hybrid.

As mentioned, Layla is a big fan of offering sales and promotions. Most of the time, you can expect to receive a $150 to $200 discount on the Layla Hybrid.

Flippable hybrid design

Like the Original model, the Layla Hybrid is double-sided with two different firmness profiles. However, unlike the Original model, the Hybrid contains coils.

Here’s a quick look at the construction of the mattress, working from the soft side down to the firm side:

Lastly, we’d just like to point out that the Layla Hybrid holds the same certifications as the Original model (i.e., it’s safe to sleep on). You also care for the cover in the same way as the Original Layla.

Firmness ratings

For the most part, the firmness ratings for the Layla Hybrid match that of the Original Layla. The soft side lands somewhere between 2 to 4 on the scale.

However, when it comes to comparing the firm sides, the Layla Hybrid, in our opinion, is actually a tad bit softer. We think it lands right around 4 to 6 on the scale (maybe a hair firmer, which we call a medium+).

This shouldn’t come as a huge shock, though, considering the firm side of the Layla Hybrid has the benefit of a transition layer beneath the comfort layer (the Original does not).

What the Layla Hybrid feels like

To cut to the chase, the Layla Hybrid has a very similar feel to that of the Original model. It’s a comfortable, airy memory foam feel.

Again, if you like the adaptive and molding characteristics of memory foam, we’d bet you’d dig either Layla mattress.

Layla Hybrid suitable sleeping positions

The Layla Hybrid is a good choice for all types of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself a dominant back, stomach, or side sleeper.

As with the Original model, side sleepers will most likely want to opt for the soft side of the Layla Hybrid. The thick comfort layer of memory foam is comfortable and pressure relieving. Back and stomach sleepers will most likely want to opt for the firm side for a little more support under their lower back and core.

As far as combination sleepers, it’s the same story as the Original model. Ultimately, you’ll just have to experiment with both sides to see which one you like better.

Again, combination sleepers will feel a little resistance when switching positions. This is nothing out of the ordinary with memory foam beds.

Layla Hybrid is a better option for people over 240 pounds

For the most part, we almost always recommend opting for hybrid beds over all-foam ones for people who weigh over 240 pounds. The coils in hybrid beds do a much better job of providing resistance against pressure, compared with the dense foam foundations all-foam beds use.

As such, we’d highly recommend choosing the Layla Hybrid over the Original Layla.

Layla Hybrid review verdict

It’s difficult to poke holes in the Layla Hybrid mattress quality. It offers consumers pretty much everything they need. It’s comfortable, supportive, and highly accommodating. If you’re looking for a solid hybrid mattress, you really can’t go wrong given its versatility.

If you really wanted us to nitpick the mattress, we’d say it’s not the best option if you dislike the feel of memory foam, you prefer ultra-firm beds, or you’re looking to spend less than $1,000.

Other considerations with Layla mattresses

Sleeping temperature

Although the company likes to promote that it infuses its memory foam with copper to help with heat transfer, we still wouldn’t consider the beds to be cooling. Instead, we’d rate both mattresses as temperature even.

This essentially means the beds won’t actively cool you down throughout the night, but we don’t think you’ll overheat either.

Motion suppression

This subject is particularly important for couples. It refers to how well a mattress stifles motion that originates from your partner. The more proficient your mattress is at deadening motion, the less you’ll be disturbed when your significant other switches sleeping positions or gets up in the middle of the night.

We’re happy to report that both Layla mattresses muffle movement extremely well. The Original Layla is probably a little better than the Layla Hybrid since it doesn’t have coils (no bounce), but overall, we don’t envision couples experiencing any issues with either mattress.

Perimeter support

This is another noteworthy topic for couples. Perimeter support refers to how well the edges of the mattress hold up against pressure. Couples will want a bed that provides solid perimeter support so that they don’t feel as if they’re about to fall off every time they roll over toward the side.

When sharing a mattress, surface area is limited (especially if you share a full or queen), so you’ll want to make sure you can comfortably use the entire mattress.

Luckily, both Layla mattresses perform well in this department. We didn’t notice any significant compression around the edges during our testing process. Couples can proceed safely with either Layla bed.

First, Layla mattresses ship for free. The beds will arrive at your doorstep roll-packed in a medium-size box in about 4 to 8 business days after purchasing online.

Once you see the bed has arrived, the unboxing process is very simple. Simply move the box to your bedroom, cut it open, unroll the bed out onto your frame or foundation, and then remove the plastic covering.

From there, you’ll see the bed suddenly start to inflate and take its shape. Please note, you’ll want to give the bed about 24 to 48 hours to fully decompress before you sleep on it.

Once the bed is delivered to your home, your sleep trial begins. Layla allows its customers to test their beds for 4 full months before making a final decision of whether or not to keep it.
