How to Access an Abortion in Each State

If you don’t know already, a quick scroll down your news feed on two different days will make one thing clear: In addition to being constantly debated, abortion laws are constantly in flux.

That’s why we put together this cheat sheet on the current laws in all 50 states, with a roundup of three abortion providers per state. For states without providers, you’ll find info about your nearest out-of-state options.

Glossary

The language used in abortion laws can be just as confusing as the laws themselves.

Here’s a breakdown of some common lingo you might come across:

  • Last menstrual period (LMP). This is the first day of your last period. This is the date used to help determine gestational age (how far along the pregnancy is).
  • Viability. This refers to the point at which a fetus could survive outside the uterus. It typically occurs between 24 and 28 weeks.
  • Life or health endangerment. Many states only allow abortion after a certain point in cases of life or health endangerment. This means the pregnancy poses a risk to your life or your physical or mental health. Some states only allow for exceptions in cases of life or physical (not mental) health endangerment.
  • Fetal anomaly. This refers to any kind of structural changes or developmental issues with the fetus. Some states that prohibit abortion after a certain point make exceptions pregnancies involving a fetal anomaly.
Healthline

Know your options

There are two main types of abortion. The best option for you depends on factors like:

  • how long you’ve been pregnant
  • where you live (more on this below)
  • personal preference

Medication abortion

Medication abortions are an option if you’re fewer than 10 weeks pregnant.

This nonsurgical approach involves taking two prescription medications (misoprostol and mifepristone) at home. The medication causes the lining of your uterus to shed, causing your period to start.

Surgical abortion

A surgical abortion entails going to a clinic for a procedure that empties the contents of your uterus.

This can be done two ways:

  • Aspiration. This is an option if you’re fewer than 16 weeks pregnant. First, you’ll be given medication for relaxation and pain. Your healthcare provider will then numb your cervix and insert a small suction tube.
  • Dilation and evacuation. This is an option if you’re more than 16 weeks pregnant. It’s similar to aspiration, but your healthcare provider will also dilate your cervix. Using a combination of surgical tools and suction, they’ll remove the products of pregnancy from your uterus.

How to avoid crisis pregnancy centers

When on the hunt for an abortion provider, make sure to avoid crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs).

Using a combo of false information and shaming tactics, these centers aim to keep people from accessing abortion services.

Check twice

Luckily, you can make sure the clinic you’re en route to isn’t a CPC by entering the location into the Crisis Pregnancy Center Map. Phew.

5 false facts to watch for

Some states require something called abortion counseling. That may sound legit, but some states require providers to make false claims during these sessions.

Here’s a look at some of the claims you may hear during your consultation and the truth behind them.

1. Abortion increases your risk for breast cancer: False

“Some states require that providers tell abortion seekers that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer, but this is not true,” says Dr. Jennifer Karlin, a board certified family physician and research fellow with the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

“There has been no research showing any connection between abortion and breast cancer risk,” she adds.

2. Abortion affects your fertility: False

Whether or not you’ve had an abortion has no impact on your ability to get pregnant in the future. It also does not increase your risk for complications during any future pregnancies.

3. Abortion causes lasting trauma: False

Some states require providers to inform you that having an abortion can result in a condition called post-abortion syndrome, which is said to cause lasting emotional distress, similar to PTSD.

Sure, many people experience intense emotions before or right after having an abortion. But there’s no evidence to suggest these effects are long lasting or go on to affect your overall well-being. Post-abortion syndrome also isn’t a medically recognized condition.

4. Abortion is reversible: False

In certain sates, providers are required to tell you that medication abortions can be stopped halfway through if you don’t take all the prescribed pills or instead take a high dose of progesterone.

Both of these claims are false.

5. Abortion causes fetal pain: It depends

This is a complex issue and a common topic of debate around abortion.

Most experts agree that a fetus can’t feel pain in the first 24 weeks, which is the time period in which most abortions are done.

Some suggest this may be possible as early as 12 weeks, but there isn’t evidence to support this.

How to find an abortion provider in your area

Now for the real reason you’re reading this piece: to see what the options are in your state and how to find a provider.

In this section, you’ll find details about the laws and legal requirements in your state. You’ll also find a list of providers in the top, middle, and bottom portions of each state (or the closest options across state lines).

However, as Rebecca Lea, founder and director of INeedAnA.com — one of the most comprehensive search engines for people seeking abortion providers on the internet — says, “This kind of information goes out of date pretty darn quickly as clinics close and others open.”

Our recommendation? Check out the list below. Then, double-check that they’re still open via a quick phone call or Google search.

Telemedicine options

In many states, telemedicine is a legal (and safe) option for receiving a medication abortion.

Telemedicine abortion options include:

  • carafem
  • TelAbortion
  • Aid Access

There are plenty of other sites that claim to provide the supplies for a medication abortion, but it’s important to stick with an organization that does consultations and has medical oversight.

Medication abortions are pretty safe, but they still carry some risk. The organizations listed above will walk you through everything you need to know to make the process safe and effective.

Funding options

“Both the cost and insurance coverage really depends on where you live and what the funding options for your state and current insurance plan allows,” Lea says.

On average, abortion seekers pay $504 for a medication abortion. Typically, a surgical abortion will run you about the same, according to Melissa Grant, chief operating officer of carafem. In some cases, according to Planned Parenthood, surgical abortions may cost up to $1,500, depending on how far along the pregnancy is.

Some insurance plans cover abortion, some don’t. The good news, though: There are many organizations across the country that can work with you to help get your abortion funded. To get in touch with them, check out the National Network of Abortion Funds.

Many of these groups provide additional assistance with transportation, lodging, child care, and more.

Additional support

Going through the abortion process can bring up a range of emotions, including relief, anger, frustration, and sadness, just to name a few. And some abortion seekers experience a period of grief, even if they know they made the right decision.

If you need some help processing your emotions after the fact, check out the following resources for confidential, judgment-free support:

  • All-Options
  • Exhale

Accessing abortion care in some states feels like an uphill battle, but remember: There are plenty of helpers and organizations dedicated to helping you navigate the process.
